## Two different things that get confused

A **structured citation** is a listing of your business details on another site: name, address, phone, often category and hours. Directories, aggregators, chamber listings, trade body registers. Its job is corroboration of your facts.

An **unstructured mention** is your business name appearing in ordinary text: a local news article, a supplier’s case study, a community group’s post, a forum answer. Its job is corroboration of what you do and how you are regarded.

Both reach an AI answer, by different routes and with different ceilings.

Lesson 6: reviews, mentions and citations

[/lessons/reviews-mentions-and-citations/ →](/lessons/reviews-mentions-and-citations/)

covers the broader picture; this guide is about where to spend limited time.

## How each reaches an answer

**Citations** feed the fact layer. When an engine is checking whether your phone number is what you claim, a consistent set of listings raises confidence. When they disagree, confidence drops and answers hedge. This is the mechanism described in the

NAP consistency guide

[/guide/nap-consistency-explained/ →](/guide/nap-consistency-explained/)

.

**Mentions** feed the description layer. A local paper describing you as the business that handled a specific job gives an assistant language to work with that your own marketing cannot supply, because your own marketing is guaranteed to be flattering. Review text works the same way, which is why

 matters alongside listing counts.

Broadly: citations make your facts safe to state, mentions make you worth stating.

## Why directory volume plateaus

The first few citations do real work: the major aggregators, the platforms your customers use, your trade body. They establish a consistent baseline that downstream sources refresh from.

After roughly a dozen quality listings, additional directories add almost nothing. They are often low-traffic, they frequently mangle formatting, and every extra listing is another place your details can drift out of sync. Past that point the marginal listing can be net negative.

This is why “we will submit you to 200 directories” is a service worth declining. The measurable part of it is done in the first ten.

## Where to spend the next ten hours

A realistic allocation for a local business with a clean profile:

| Hours | Task | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 2 | Correct the major data aggregators | Everything downstream refreshes from them |
| 2 | Fix the listings that send real traffic | Direct value plus consistency |
| 1 | Claim trade body and chamber listings you qualify for | Relevance and authority in your sector |
| 1 | Audit for old or duplicate listings | Removes active contradictions |
| 4 | Pursue two genuine mentions | The part nobody else is doing |

The last row is where most of the differentiation sits, because it is the only part that cannot be bought at scale.

## Earning mentions without a PR budget

**Be the person who answers.** Local journalists and trade publications need a source who explains a seasonal problem in plain language. Answer promptly once and you get called again.

**Be useful to an organisation with a website.** Sponsoring a junior team, running a free session, or fixing something for a community group produces a genuine mention on a site with local standing.

**Be listed by people you already work with.** Suppliers and manufacturers often maintain approved-installer or stockist lists. Ask.

**Publish something worth citing.** A page that answers a question better than anything else locally gets referenced by people writing about the topic, which is the same logic as the quotable-passage work in

Lesson 3

[/lessons/local-site-content-ai-can-cite/ →](/lessons/local-site-content-ai-can-cite/)

.

None of that scales, and that is exactly why it counts.

## The one rule that applies to both

Whatever the source, the details must match your canonical record. A mention is only useful if it names the business correctly. A citation is worse than useless if it carries a number you stopped using two years ago.

Consistency first, then reach. That order does not change.

## How to judge whether a listing is worth having

A simple test for any directory or platform before you spend time on it.

**Does it send you traffic, or could it?** Check your referrals. A directory nobody visits helps only as corroboration, which the aggregators already provide.

**Does it have standing in your sector?** A licensing body, a trade association or a manufacturer’s approved list carries weight that a generic business directory does not.

**Can you control the entry?** If you cannot correct your own details, the listing is a liability waiting to contradict you.

**Does it charge for something you already have?** Many paid directories sell placement you do not need. Decline politely.

Three yes answers means claim it. One or none means skip it and spend the time on a mention instead, which is the work described in

Lesson 6

[/lessons/reviews-mentions-and-citations/ →](/lessons/reviews-mentions-and-citations/)

.

## A realistic mention plan for one quarter

Mentions feel unattainable because they get discussed as PR. At local scale they are mostly relationship work.

**Month one.** List ten organisations that already know you: suppliers, a trade body, a chamber, a community group you have helped, a local publication that covers your sector. Pick three.

**Month two.** Make one specific, easy-to-say-yes-to request of each. An approved-installer listing. A short comment for an article. A line on a sponsor page. Nobody needs a press release.

**Month three.** Follow up once, thank whoever said yes, and record what worked.

Two mentions a quarter is eight a year, from sources with genuine local standing. That is a stronger position than sixty directory listings, and it is the part of the work that competitors buying citation packages cannot replicate.

Common questions

## Questions readers ask

How many directory listings do I need? expand\_more

The major data aggregators plus a handful of relevant local or trade directories. Beyond that, returns flatten and the risk of introducing an inconsistency rises.

Do paid citation services work? expand\_more

They save time on the initial push, and they can introduce inconsistencies if left unmonitored. If you use one, give it your canonical details in writing and audit the output afterwards.

Does a mention without a link still count? expand\_more

Yes. Assistants read text, so an unlinked mention on a relevant site still carries information about who you are and what you do. It will not pass link equity, but that is a different mechanism.

Which should I do first? expand\_more

Citations, because they are bounded and fixable. Once the aggregators and the platforms that matter are accurate, shift your effort to earning a small number of genuine mentions.
